My hosting plan came up for renewal and I have to admit I had to consider whether I wanted to pay $50 for another year. Not because my host (A Small Orange) isn’t good, in fact they are excellent. No, it’s because I can’t get myself motivated to write anymore.
When I analyze why I’m no longer motivated I come up with a variety of reasons.
Lack of content isn’t one of the reasons. I have more than enough ideas, but there are reasons that keep me from writing about the content that comes to me.
1) Negativity. I realize that a lot of what I find relevant about life here is very negative. I think much of that comes from the fact that so many things are different, or done differently here than what I grew up with. Much of it makes no sense to me. I can’t figure out the reasoning, and the excuses I get don’t seem to justify. Not that it matters, because they aren’t going to change for me (or you).
I was going to write an article called “Culture Excuse”, because I feel that is often used to justify the lack of basic courtesy here. The Philippines isn’t alone in that, but I decided not to write it because it would appear too negative.
No one wants to read a bunch of negative articles about life, and it’s not really any fun to write them.
2) Fear. That’s probably much too strong a word, maybe concern is better, but with the passage of the Cybercrime bill which can take anything I say anywhere on the internet and be considered liable, the animosity of many filipinos towards foreigners (heightened and made more public by incidences that occur with Americans), and the way expats attack each other (lawsuits, deportation requests, etc.) all make me very nervous about writing anything that could be construed as controversial. Even that last sentence is enough to upset many people I suspect.
3) Lack of direction. I guess these are all related really. I have things I wish to share, I just don’t feel I can express them here anymore. Many articles could be considered offensive, controversial, inappropriate, etc.
I’ve considered making a new site, that had nothing to do with this one, and using a different name. But frankly I feel that foreigners are being watched very closely here, and I’ve no reason to add extra scrutiny to my life just for the sake of sharing a few things that I’ve encountered here.
Maybe I’ll get excited about writing generic articles about Samal or wattage testers again. Maybe it’s just an adjustment phase I’m going through. But for now that’s the reason for my lack of output.
If anyone cared to know 😉

Hi Randy, I enjoy your articles. I was married and spent my honeymoon at Paradise Island on Samal, and we own a home in Davao. Sorry you have lost your motivation to write. I enjoy print media much more than youtube and/or podcasts that I seem some bloggers moving towards. I have several sites that I check regularly to get my philippines fix. Yours is one. I still have several more years before retirement, but I like to keep abreast of things over there so I will be better prepared for time that I plan to spend there. Thanks for the information you provide. I find it valuable.

Thanks, Jamie.
Maybe the motivation will come back? Maybe I can find the “right” articles that can be of use and not feel too concerned about. Maybe my concern is unfounded. I’m trying to talk to some others about that now.

Had been wandering why you stopped writing many new articles, now I know.
Have you ever read the Manila Rants &Raves, of Craigslist section before, there are a few that post some good articles on it, and a few real idiots also, but you can remain anonymous, and say whatever you choose to say, with no worry of consequences at least.
I will continue to check your website once in a while for new posts though, regardless.

Thanks, Bill.
No I’ve never read Manila Rants & Raves. Maybe I get enough of that around here already 😉
I’ll see what happens here. Was just trying to let people know. It had been awhile.

Hey Randy,
I hear you. It’s hard to stay motivated with a blog. On my site I feel like I’m just rambling on about stuff with no real focus. So I’ll be closing down my site next month. After a while I hope to start a new website with more focus and direction. I would say if you don’t enjoy it anymore, let it go. You can always start another later.
Also, I seem to enjoy twitter a lot and spend some time doing that.

Hi Kevin,
Hope all is going well there.
Yeah, there are a lot of things going on with it, as I said. Lack of focus is an issue for sure. It certainly helps to have passion for it, and at times I have. Not recently, but maybe I’ll find that again.
One can always start a new blog, and with the domain name that can be useful, but I’m not sure that is worthwhile given my other concerns. Maybe they will turn out to be less of problem than I currently see them. Tell will tell on that.

Sorry you that you feel this way. I wish you can write something that is not focused on the negative aspect of life there. Ranting and raving will not make things better. It will bring people down instead. It takes too much energy to dwell on the negative stuff. Living in the USA is not perfect either. There are lots of negativity. How I handle it is to focus on the good aspect of every one and to see beauty on things around me. I had been struggling to fight this for a year now and it is pulling me down. The rat race, the impatience, the ranting and raving of people in my work place and everywhere, the negative TV shows, the lack of appreciation among people, the decline of respect especially the morality issue…I can keep on and on ….. I realized I am becoming like those that I have mentioned. There are days I feel like flying back to the Philippines to escape this way of life. Things in the Philippines, in USA and all over the world are just going to get worse. If we ponder on the negative stuff the outcome will also be negative. ” I hate stuff” was my favorite word, I will try not to use that but instead I will say “I do not like it”. You can not change all the things around but you can change yourself . So, start concentrating on better stuff that will not generate too much heat but some sense of fresh feeling . It is easy to see bad stuff when we are not in our own country…we tend to compare. I think Randy you just miss the good USA. I know I miss the imperfect Philippines also.

One of my points was that I don’t want to dwell on the negative and writing those articles only forces me to so.
Of course I miss certain things in the US, but I think it’s a misrepresentation to say I miss the U.S.
With my dad being in the military I lived in quite a few towns. I quickly learned there are positives and negatives everywhere.

Hey, Randy,
I know how you feel. It isn’t easy to write without the proper motivation. The main problem you’re having is the title of your blog, “Journey to Samal”. It means you’ve confined yourself to that subject, with vary little leeway to go any other direction.

Hi RT,
I long ago gave up the idea of writing just about Samal. In fact I rarely do. Samal certainly gave me some inspiration, and not having a specific topic/domain lacks purpose, but that’s not really reason for my lack of motivation.
I’ve played with the idea of starting other blogs, but honestly I don’t have an overwhelming desire to write. They would end up the same.
I think I need to focus on my http://www.wheretofindit-davao.com blog. That doesn’t really require writing, but doesn’t require I find subjects.

I was not aware of the where to find it Davao website, thanks Randy.
You know of anyplace there where a person can buy the scratch and dent appliances the stores cant sell at full price. I told some members of my wifes family I would buy them a new, refrig and stove for Christmas. They live in Tago, but they own a van, and could buy it in Davao, since they go there every few months to do other business there.

That’s an interesting question, Bill.
My experience, mostly, has been that they don’t discount those items. They still sell them for full price. I had one instance at National Bookstore where they took 10% (lang) off because the book was damaged, but that seems to be rare.
Far more common is the Ukay Ukay stores for used items, mostly clothes. Used appliances are seen at repair shops or pawn shops.
I did see a large store up on Mamay Road that seems to have a lot of used appliances. I’m not sure if they have any scratch and dent type.
There are probably some surplus places here but I’ve not really run into them. I’ll check further now that you’ve brought it up.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Sir thank you for the manual of Omni Power meter and for your good review on DC inverter fan. I’m planning to save to buy that fan because it’s really cost effective.
Sir please don’t stop writing on your blog, it was really helpful and very informative. Just take your time on writing, I think why you are here in the Philippines is to take rest. Relax and enjoy your stay here sir!

You’re welcome. Maybe I can get motivated to write more in the future. We’ll see.
