Quezon, Bukidnon Industries – Say What?
Bukidnon. We plan on taking a trip and checking the area out next year. The back up plan, at this point in time, is to live on the east side of Samal or Bukidnon if our current location on Samal Island doesn’t work for one reason or another. The most likely scenario that could drive us away would be over development of the area in which we have our land. I don’t expect that it’s going to be a problem, but a backup plan never hurts as far as I can tell.
So I was doing a little research….. internet surfing if you will. I wanted to find out what might be the most logical locations in Bukidnon to entertain as potential retirement havens. As far south as reasonable made a lot of sense to me, as it would be nearer Davao. Further north and we would be approaching Cagayan De Oro, but near Davao is where we want to be, and that is also closer to family.
Looking at the map, Quezon seemed to be situated just right. A straight shot down to Davao, not far from Valencia and Malaybalay. A benefit is the easy access to Mlang and my wive’s relatives.
So I pulled up Wikipedia to see what they had to say about the city. Always a good place to start, I figure. I know I have an awful lot to learn about life in the Philippines, and I try to keep an open mind, but I must say I was mighty surprised to find this:
Trade and Industry
Industries (and/or companies) presently operating in the municipality includes:
- Drug & Human Trafficking
- BUSCO Sugar Milling Company
- BUSCO Refinery
- BUSCO Organic Fertilizer Processing
- Small Scale Grains Processing
- Cattle Raising
- Hog Raising
- Poultry Raising
- Marijuana Plantation
- Damang/Spider Raising
Anything kind of stand out to you? Well it did to me!! I didn’t know what to make of this. Was it a language translation issue? Someone trying to be funny? Possibly it’s the truth?
Spider Raising – not really for me, but OK not a problem. Marijuana Plantations – well I suppose there are plenty of those around the world, not sure you want to advertise it. BUT DRUG & HUMAN TRAFFICKING? Aren’t those things illegal, not to mention kind of disgusting to boot?
Like I said, I’ve got a lot to learn about the Philippines and Wiki hasn’t been known to be the most accurate resource at times. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t be putting down any roots in Quezon, if this were indeed true.
Hi Randy – Wow! Fascinating. Quezon is not the sleepy town that I had thought it to be!
I agree about the location of Quezon Town, I like the area. It is an area also on Feyma and my list for possible alternate places to live in the future.
I certainly never knew about these things on Wikipedia, though. The important thing to remember, though, is that anybody can put anything on Wikipedia.
Hi Mindanao Bob – thanks for weighing in on this. It certainly could be someone trying to be funny with Wiki. Not really sure the motive of doing so. The rest of the article looks pretty straight forward, though.
We’ll probably take a day and travel up that way. Through Quezon and up to Valencia and Malaybalay. It’s an area that I believe we would visit on a somewhat regular basis, even if we don’t live there.
LMAO!
Okay, that was really hilarious (and embarrassing, I must say)! I should also say that reading that entry was a bit painful – I may not have been born and raised here in Bukidnon but I have certainly come to love it here.
First things first – the entry has a lot of factual errors, outdated infos, some grammatical errors and there are certainly a lot of weird things in there (Torjack Girls Production?!?!) I already informed the Mayor about this – hopefully they can do something about that entry. Thanks for pointing this out – I’m sure the local government didn’t know about this. I didn’t, too! Wow, the lengths people go through just to be cute or funny at the expense of a town that strives hard to be a good place for people to live in. Tsk tsk. I agree with Bob – anybody can insert anything in Wikipedia.
Re: industries in Quezon, Bukidnon – I’ve covered news reports in that area a lot of times. The marijuana plantation thing – well there have been (and still are) a lot of police cases related to this but it’s a problem that’s not exclusive to Quezon. Like you said, it’s a problem besetting a lot of areas around the world and I’m sure the provincial and the local government units here are doing their best to address this problem. There have been a lot of “public burning sessions” of confiscated marijuana seedlings as of late and a lot have already been prosecuted so I’m sure people here have become wiser.
Re: damang/spider raising – this is nothing to worry about. At best, these probably just pertain to very few farmers who catch spiders at night or in their farms and sell these to school kids.
Now re: human/drug trafficking – I won’t deny that there have been a couple of cases in the past when young girls would be recruited to work as maids in Manila or outside the Philippines and then they end up as bar girls/prostitutes. This is just like any other problem plaguing small towns in the country. Unscrupulous individuals would take advantage of girls who barely finished school and promise them the moon and the stars. Some of these girls are daughters of tapaseros (sugarcane field workers) who want to help their families (tapaseros are only paid a very small amount for daily work – and their work’s seasonal as well)
IMO, Quezon is a great place to live in especially if you like the “small town feel.”
Hi Mindanaoan – thanks for your take on this. I appreciate getting the straight scoop from someone as knowledgeable of the area as you. It sounds as though someone may have received some treatment they didn’t like from the town, and in their own way retaliated. Otherwise it’s hard to explain why Quezon was chosen for such comments. The way you put it, it could be true for virtually any small town there.
Quezon sounds like a nice little town, and I hope someone does fix Wiki to better reflect that. We’ll definitely put it on our “to do” list to visit there and see it first hand.
Randy,
Where is the map in your post from? Is is Samal, or Davao area or someplace else? I am so lost on where you are talking about. I can’t locate any of these towns on my maps.
I thought you liked Samal. I can’t imagine Samal getting too overcrowded anytime soon with the world economic slowdown. We’ll be setting up shop in Digos as it’s cheaper than Davao but close by. Come down and check it out sometime and visit.
Hi Kevin – Bukidnon is a province north of Davao City. It’ s well known for it’s agriculture and cooler climates because of the mountainous area.
We love Samal. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. I do have a strong interest to check out Bukidnon, partially as a backup plan. I also suspect it is an area we would visit fairly often, even if living on Samal. We actually have some friends here in Spokane that have land in Bukidnon. They plan to live there someday, so it’s likely that we would visit them from time to time.
We’d be glad to come down to Digos and visit. You are going to be spending time on Samal, aren’t you?
ok, I see where you are talking about. From the map above, I was lost looking at it.
We would like to build a small house on Samal so we can go swimming and scuba diving and just hang out. I plan on spending quality time on Samal. We’ll be in Digos to live, Davao to shop and visit, and Samal for lots of time off. I’m dreaming of having lots of time to think and study about some of my mathematics and science topics and maybe publish in these areas.
Yea, it’s good t visit the relatives. We have relatives in Dipolog, Mindanao, so we hope to visit there once in a while.
Hi Kevin- glad the new map helped.
I hope you get to spend plenty of time on Samal. I know I’m more interested in staying on the island than running off somewhere all the time. Asawa ko may have different ideas about that, though
I was born and raised in my beloved home town Quezon,Bukidnon and i think i know more better than wiki.Quezon is the best place for tose who are willing to retired with peace of mind.Quezon is a small town and accessible to Cagayan de oro city and davao city.It is unfortunate that some people made a bad comment about Quezon.I do agree with Bob that Quezon is the best place for retirement.
HI Lynn Juab – thanks for your visiting and your comment. I appreciate your first hand view of Quezon. I’m not sure what all that was about on Wiki, but we will hopefully go there next year and see for ourselves. I do think the location is very nice.
Hi Randy, thanks for your reply…well,am glad to hear that you are planning to visit in my home town by next year.I hope to see you there and keep in touch Randy.may God bless and take care.
